work, play, live

Starting a small business is one of the most challenging and rewarding career paths to chose. When Walker and I started visicswire a couple years ago, we knew what we were getting into. We expected to work more than 9-5 M-F; we expected to not see any immediate returns. We decided to put our energy in the future of the company, the future of our careers and the future of this very central part of our lives.

Our investments are paying off. This year we were able to hire a couple people to work with us, to move our office downtown into the Loop, and to pay ourselves a little bit better. Our careers and skills continue to improve as time marches on, but sometimes, just like when we started visicswire, I feel we can just work too much.

Earlier this week, I must admit I was feeling the burn of the long work days that can soo quickly turn into weeks: Do a 10 hour day, head home, crash, wake-up and head back to the office… repeat. The scary thing is, that although I was feeling somewhat ‘off’, I didn’t realize that I the balance of work and non-work was getting a little lopsided.

I love my job. I love working with the people here at visicswire, I love our clients, and I am excited for what the future has in store for our company. I expect to work, and to work very hard, but I want to make sure work is not the only thing I am concerned with. If ya work too hard, you can become less efficient and less effective than you could be. Let’s all take an hour off every once in a while and play some frisbee.
